Messagemaker Displays has launched its new Off-Grid Variable Messaging Sign (VMS). The  highway compliant, full-color display can be integrated with a variety of off-grid power sources, with no need for cabling and trenching.

The Off-Grid VMS Solution utilises Messagemaker Displays’ low consumption VMS display screen and is compatible with technologies such as highway-approved solar panels, fuel cells and wind turbine systems. By utilising renewable energy instead of the main power grid, it can help operators to significantly lower their carbon footprint, as well as reducing  installation and operational costs, without compromising on quality.

With a lightweight design to reduce initial framework and installation costs, the full color screen has a display size of 1280 x 2240mm to provide six lines of clearly displayed information for oncoming motorists. It is able to display all TSRGD compliant symbols. At a resolution of 64 x 112 pixels and an average power of 115 to 150W, the low power consumption screen provides real energy efficiency.

Crucially, the Off-Grid VMS Solution is also compatible with all standard protocols to enable integration with Centre for High Accuracy Retroreflection Measurements (CHARM), Urban Traffic Management Control (UMTC) and the National Transportation Communications for Intelligent Transportations System Protocol (NTCIP).

“Our customers are increasingly looking for energy-efficient solutions that can reduce their carbon footprint,” comments Danny Adamson, Managing Director at Stocksigns. “As a system that can utilise renewable energy sources, the Off-Grid VMS Solution provides significant savings to users in terms of both installation and operating costs.”

Exhibiting at Highways UK

Messagemaker Displays Ltd will be showcasing  a number of its LED signage products at this year’s Highways UK – November 3-4 at the NEC in Birmingham, UK. Those who attend the stand will have the opportunity to view and interact with the company’s products and meet the expert team from Messagemaker Displays.

Among the products on display will be the VMS Tower Unit, the company’s one-of-a-kind temporary traffic management solution. Robust yet easy to transport, the Tower Unit is the ideal mobile roadside message solution for when space is at a premium. Both cost and energy efficient with a full colour VMS screen, the Tower Unit offers a bespoke content management system for easy remote scheduling and status updates, while also providing power savings of up to 50% in comparison with traditional mobile VMS units.

Another product of note to be showcased is the innovative Vehicle Activated Warning Sign, which combines eye-catching LEDs and reflective signage to create a highly effective vehicle activated road sign. The flashing amber beacons and light-up  ‘SLOW DOWN’ message can be combined with any CE certified reflective warning sign, including ‘Traffic Lights Ahead’ or ‘Children Crossing’, to create a targeted sign to combat any specific safety concern.  The sign also features an integrated vehicle detection radar which is pre-configured to a desired trigger speed and display time. With three power options – battery, mains or solar – the VAS Warning sign is a flexible, easy-to-install, energy efficient solution for any roadside requirement.

Other Messagemaker products due to be displayed are the TSRGD compliant Urban Speed VAS sign and Lane Control Signs along with newly developed traffic cameras, including the VAS Snap camera.

“We are delighted to be exhibiting at Highways UK again this year to showcase our innovative products,” says the company’s technical director Santosh Surabi. “It’s be great to be back on an exhibition stand after all the virtual shows and zoom meetings, speaking to visitors about our energy efficient LED traffic solutions.”
